Marine VHF Radio Channel Monitoring:
Coastguard is aware of recent incidents that have highlighted the fact that not all boaties are monitoring Marine VHF Channel 16 (Distress Channel) when they are at sea or out fishing. This often means distress messages on Channel 16 are not being heard by boats quite often in the vicinity of an incident. It also means they are not hearing any messages broadcast by Maritime Radio in the event of Mayday's, Weather Watches and Tsunami warnings etc. All boaties are urged to monitor not only their local Coastguard Channel but also Channel 16. This is easily done on most Marine Radio's by using the Dual Watch function. For example, set your radio channel to Coastguard Whangamata Channel 04, the push the DW (Dual Watch) button. This will set your radio to monitor both Channel 04 and Channel 16. This will all help to make us all safer on the water.
